Seating is limited and available on a first come, first serve basis.

The 3 day conference is designed to provide art collectors valuable insights and hard-earned advice on building an art collection. Sessions are geared for both beginner and experienced collectors. As the only such conference like this in the nation, we are recruiting a world-class level of speakers. Each session will be filled with usable tips, distilled facts, do’s and don’ts and lessons learned -in a fast-paced, user-friendly format- without sales hype or academic treatments. Some sessions will be solo presentations, others, moderated panel discussions.

2-3pm Beginning Your Art Collection with Printed Editions

  This presentation explores the who, what, when, how & why of beginning a collection of printed editions. Some of the topics explored will include:
· the impact and value of Limited Edition prints
· different types of prints, including: lithographs, giclees, woodcuts,

  How should a collector choose which artist to buy and why? What should the evaluation process behind each art purchase be? In this panel discussion, three different art dealers and an Art Historian will describe the differences between periods, genres and medium as well as the impact of value on living verses deceased artists work. Explore such factors as how museum shows and media coverage affect market values. Who do these panelists see as the rising stars in the current art market and why?

Noon-1pm An Insider's Guide to Buying & Collecting Art

  Jerald Melberg offers new and experienced collectors his tips and strategies for buying & collecting art. Learn what you need to know as well as the resources you should have before investing in your next piece. Determine what your parameters may be as well as how to train your eye to recognize quality and value. Learn how to approach Art Dealers and what you can expect from a Dealer as you start building your collection.
   
1-2pm Collecting Sculpture
  Brigitte Micmacker, Co-Owner and Director, Sculpturesite Gallery
  Why collect sculpture? What are the factors that make sculpture collecting different? Brigitte Micmacker has focused entirely on modern and contemporary sculpture in the galleries she and her partner John Denning have owned and run for 20 years. She will explore what sculpture is available, the best sources and what to expect, establishing value, understanding sculptors, the commission process, focusing a collection, following a passion, and other topics to enhance the comfort level for collecting a medium often under-represented in collections.

3-4pm What You Need to Know About Collecting Prints
  William van Straaten, Owner, Riverhouse van Straaten
  Renee Bott, Co-founder, Paulson Bott Press
  Jeff Wallin is an artist trained in traditional methods of painting, printmaking, and drawing. For the last ten years, he has been applying his abilities and visual aesthetic to the challenging medium of studio glass. His portraits and figure studies are created with a painter's sensibility, and take advantage of unique properties of glass that push the work beyond painting. Wallin will discuss his influences and inspiration, and provide some insight into the motivations for his choice of both subject and technique.
   
4-5pm The Art Framing Primer
  Paul Porambo, Founder & CEO of Fine Art Services, San Francisco
  This how-to session provides guidelines for selecting the right frame for the right work of art. Learn how your works can be significantly enhanced both aesthetically and financially with proper matting and framing.   Richard Polsky, private dealer and author of I Sold Andy Warhol (too soon), offers insider tips for collectors looking to acquire work at art fairs. Unlike buying at auction or from a gallery, art expos are all about a sense of urgency. The expression “if you snooze you loose” is apropos. With that in mind, Polsky will discuss how best to utilize your time, approach dealers with offers, and most important — have fun! At the conclusion of his talk, Polsky will sign copies of I Sold Andy Warhol (too soon).

After several years of skyrocketing fine art prices, the market has leveled off -- reflecting today's economic crisis. Experts say prices are now retracting to 2006-2007 levels. They add that if your client's art collection was appraised prior to 2006, a new appraisal will help avoid being underinsured.

Does an artist become more important, relevant or talked about once s/he is deceased? How can a collector help raise the value of their collection? If a journalist writes about an artist, how does that affect the value of that artists work? How do reporters explain the Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons phenomenon? We will also hear from two major Art Dealers on How they use the media to their advantage. What is their perspective on How the Media Influences the Art Market?
